“You have been to Pebble Cove, then?” I asked, staring at Emily. Her client’s gaze ping-ponged between the two of us, confusion written in her frown.

“Yes, my old boyfriend used to live out there.” She started clipping the woman’s hair.

“Why would you lie?” I asked.

Megan nodded as she brushed bleach on another small section of my hair. “Yeah, that’s kinda shady, Em.”

“I wasn’t proud of the relationship,” Emily said. “He wasn’t nice to me in the end. I guess I was trying to forget him. Anyway, he was super old. I heard he had a heart attack or something.” She shivered.

I narrowed my eyes. Where had she heard that?

Megan stopped. “Em, are you serious? That’s intense.”

“One of my tables at the restaurant was talking about it the other night.” Emily grimaced.

“The restaurant?” I asked.

“I work over at the clubhouse on Wednesdays and Thursdays, when I’m not working here,” Emily explained.

I sat up a little straighter. “Every Wednesday and Thursday?”

She nodded. “Three to ten.”

My shoulders relaxed from the hunched position they’d been in since hearing Emily’s confession. It would be easy enough to call the clubhouse and ask them to verify that Emily had been working on the night Dominic was killed.

I stared at my reflection in Megan’s mirror as the hairdressers continued their conversation about Dominic’s death. I resembled a middle school science experiment with all the foil on my head, or maybe leftovers in the fridge. Now that I was sitting there, bleach stripping away my hair color, I wondered if there might’ve been an easier, less-invasive way to get the information I just learned. Sending out a quiet plea to the universe, I hoped my hair turned out okay.

After a nerve-racking twenty minutes of sitting under a heater, Megan peeled off the foils and washed my hair. She unwrapped the towel once I was seated in front of the mirror. Subtle, small strips of blonde hair peeked out from my brown locks. The blonde was concentrated mostly toward the ends. I smiled, meeting Megan’s gaze in the mirror.

“It looks great,” I said, failing to hide the surprise in my voice.

She laughed. “Just wait until I style it.” Running her fingers through my hair with one hand, she grabbed a blow-dryer with the other and got to work.

Drying, curling, and styling went quickly after that. Megan was right. Everything looked even better once she’d styled it. The highlights were natural, like I’d just spent a bunch of time out on the beach instead of holed up in my tea shop reading books.

After I paid and thanked Megan, I checked my watch. I had just enough time before I was supposed to meet Riley at ten.

When I pulled into Bean Me Up, my heart raced. Was it smart to go behind Asher’s back like this? I’d lied to him about researching his death before, and it had never turned out well. Maybe I could just see what Riley had and decide from there. If it wasn’t helpful, I would drop the subject.
